Petrochemicals Fuel Cancer Risk, Are Widely Used in Healthcare

Petrochemicals are a group of manmade chemicals widely used in plastic production and derived from fossil fuels, including petroleum and natural gas. According to a recent research article, petrochemicals are a major contributor to increased cancer risk and negatively impact overall health.

The article was a collaboration between researchers and oncologists and cited specific examples of the highly toxic nature of petrochemicals, including “Cancer Alley” in New Orleans, Louisiana that has over 200 petrochemical facilities and cancer rates 50 times higher than the national average.

Study author James Shultz also highlighted how, ironically, the U.S. healthcare system is a huge consumer of petrochemical products, particularly single-use plastics: “We’re trying to save lives, but our recent shift toward single-use plastics in healthcare means oncology professionals end up contributing to the very problems they are working to solve.”

Overall, the study authors call for a shift away from disposable and single-use items, particularly in healthcare, replacing them with reusable products wherever possible. They believe that doing so will make the supply chain more resilient during disasters and cut down on patient exposure to toxic chemicals.

Good Oral Health Can Lower Inflammation, Improve Cardiometabolic Health

Tooth decay (cavities), gum disease, and other oral health issues are associated with higher levels of systemic inflammation and a greater risk of heart disease, a new study has found. Poorer dental health was also linked to negative measures of cardiometabolic health.

Cardiometabolic diseases include many common, but often preventable, conditions like heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. There are many risk factors influencing cardiometabolic health, but increasing evidence suggests that oral health plays a key role.

The latest study involved nearly 7,000 adult participants who had their oral health and specific metabolic measures assessed at baseline and during a followup period. Overall, the findings suggest that better oral health can help combat chronic inflammation and improve cardiometabolic health measures, while poor oral health has the opposite effect.

“Oral infections represent a significant risk factor for systemic health,” said Kåre Buhlin, an adjunct professor from Karolinska Institutet. “Importantly, they are modifiable through early prevention and treatment.”

Is Your Cookware Toxic?

Are you one of many people using cookware laced with toxic “forever chemicals”?

Most conventional nonstick cookware contains these harmful “forever” chemicals— known as PFAS— that are now linked to cancer, hormone disruption, autoimmune issues, and more. These toxins can off-gas as toxic fumes when pans containing them are heated AND leach into food, particularly if your pans are scratched or damaged. This is exactly why Chef’s Foundry developed a line of completely non-toxic ceramic cookware called the P600 Cookware range. It’s made with a revolutionary new ceramic coating that produces a natural nonstick surface and is resistant to cracking, chipping, and discoloration. Plus, it won’t off-gas or leach toxins into your food.

11 Top Causes of Feeling “Tired All the Time”

Fatigue has, unfortunately, become the new normal for many people. Though it often gets brushed off, feeling tired all the time is usually a warning sign that something is wrong. Nutrient deficiencies – particularly iron, vitamin D, or B12 – are a common culprit behind fatigue as are thyroid disorders, digestive disorders, and blood sugar imbalances. Lyme disease (transmitted by ticks) has become something of an epidemic and can also cause chronic fatigue. (More)

Low Testosterone Levels Linked to Higher Arthritis Risk

Arthritis is a common inflammatory joint disease that affects millions of people in the U.S. alone. Previous research has indicated that hormones may play a role in the development of arthritis, and a new study has now found that lower levels of testosterone, specifically, are associated with an increased risk for arthritis. Interestingly, this held true for both men and women, though it should be noted that a cause and effect relationship between arthritis and testosterone is not yet established. (More)

Following a Mediterranean Diet May Slow Cognitive Decline

Following a Mediterranean-style diet is already linked to a number of health benefits, and now a recent study has found that it may help to slow cognitive decline in older adults. The study took place over the course of 12 years and revealed that participants who regularly ate the main food groups belonging to the Mediterranean diet – whole grains, plant protein, etc. – were less likely to experience cognitive impairment than those who followed other dietary patterns. High Stress Levels in Pregnancy Linked to Child Behavioral Problems

Research has long indicated a link between the mental health of the mother during pregnancy and the likelihood of behavioral issues developing in the child. A new study has offered more insight into the matter by finding that high levels of stress, anxiety, or depression during pregnancy may increase the risk of ADHD symptoms and aggressive or hostile behavior from early childhood through adolescence. However, the overall risk increase was relatively small. (More)

5 Best Teas to Support Your Immune System

Certain types of tea are rich in polyphenols and other plant compounds that are thought to have beneficial effects on the immune system. Green tea and black tea are rich in catechins and theaflavins, which are both types of polyphenols, and may support immune health. Turmeric tea contains curcumin, which has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties, while ginger tea is rich in compounds that may help fight off infections as well as ease a sore throat.
